Study in Malaysia: Making an Application

Study in Malaysia: Making an Application

How the Application Process Works

Study in Malaysia: Making an Application. In Malaysia, the application process for international students varies depending on the institution and the level of study. This guide provides the basic information you’ll need to apply and directs you to useful resources.

If you haven’t decided which programme or university to apply to yet, our guide Study in Malaysia: Preparing to Apply is a good place to start.

1. Apply

In Malaysia, students typically apply directly to universities or through centralized platforms like the **Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS)**, which handles international student applications. Each institution may have its own application process, so it’s important to check the specific requirements of your chosen university.

You can apply to multiple universities, but keep in mind that application fees typically range from RM 100 to RM 500 (approximately 20-100 EUR), depending on the institution.

Malaysian and ASEAN Students

If you’re a Malaysian citizen or from an ASEAN country, you may benefit from simplified application processes and lower tuition fees. Ensure you have proof of citizenship, academic transcripts, and any required language proficiency certificates ready.

International Students (Non-ASEAN)

Students from outside Malaysia and ASEAN will need to apply through the university or EMGS. You’ll need to submit documents such as academic transcripts, proof of language proficiency (e.g., IELTS or TOEFL), and a copy of your passport. Once your application is reviewed, the university will issue a conditional offer letter.

For international students, it’s recommended to apply early to allow sufficient time for visa processing and accommodation arrangements.

2. Visa Requirements

Malaysian and ASEAN Students

If you’re a Malaysian citizen or from an ASEAN country, you do not need a student visa to study in Malaysia. However, you will need to provide proof of identity and academic qualifications during the application process.

International Students (Non-ASEAN)

If you’re from outside Malaysia and ASEAN, you will need to apply for a Student Pass through EMGS. The process begins once you receive your offer letter from the university. The Student Pass application can take 4-6 weeks to process, so it’s important to start early.

  • To apply for a Student Pass, you’ll need:
  • An offer letter from a Malaysian university
  • Proof of payment for tuition fees (if required)
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses
  • A valid passport
  • Medical check-up results (from an approved clinic)
  • Proof of language proficiency (if required)

After arriving in Malaysia, you’ll need to complete additional steps to validate your Student Pass, including a medical screening and registration with the immigration department.

3. Health Insurance Requirements

Malaysian and ASEAN Students

Malaysian citizens and ASEAN students may have access to local healthcare services. However, it’s recommended to have health insurance to cover any additional medical expenses.

International Students (Non-ASEAN)

Health insurance is mandatory for all international students in Malaysia. Most universities require you to purchase their approved health insurance plan, which covers medical expenses during your stay. Proof of insurance is required during the Student Pass application process.

4. Accommodation

Most Malaysian universities offer on-campus accommodation, such as dormitories or student hostels. These are often affordable and convenient, especially for first-year students. However, many students also opt for off-campus housing, such as shared apartments or private rentals, which can be more flexible and cost-effective.
